The main difficulty of this tense is to pick the correct auxiliary verb between avere and essere. This choice depends on the characteristics of the verb we need to conjugate. Verbs like studiare need avere as auxiliary because they are transitive. The easiest way to understand if a verb is transitive is to check if it can hold a direct object (e.g. Io studio matematica, where matematica is the direct object). In fact, verbs like andare use essere as auxiliary because they are intransitive, they can’t hold a direct object.
The truth is that it is tricky to keep all this in mind when you are writing or speaking. Considering that the vast majority of Italian verbs is transitive (use auxiliary avere), a good strategy is to study a list of verbs that need essere, and use avere for the rest.
You will notice how verbs using essere often have a meaning related to:
- movement
- lack of movement
- being
- state
- change of state

Only with auxiliary essere the past participle will change its ending to agree w/ gender and number of the subject: Marco è uscito, Lucia è uscita, Luigi e Franco sono usciti, Maria e Clara sono uscite.
