This Open Resource Education (OER) textbook was written for the introductory music theory course (Music 6) at Long Beach City College, which is both a GE course, as well as a prerequisite for additional theory courses. The first version was supported by a stipend from the college.

If you are enrolled in the course, then this is the textbook, including all of the lecture videos, required for the course. All other required assignments are in the Canvas course shell.

If you are not enrolled in the course, you are welcome to glean whatever you like from the text and the embedded videos. You will not, of course, have access to any of the assignments, grading, and feedback that are contained in the course, but if you are inspired, feel free to register for the course! It is offered year-round, including online, so it doesn’t matter where you live.

As an OER project, this is a “living” textbook, and I am always chipping away at updates to the text, video, and examples in order to make it clearer and more relevant.
